News Flash 1 Issued at 22:30hrs 18.4.2008 Jimmy McRae / Andy Richardson (Porsche 911) survived loosing a fan belt to hold an overnight lead on an action packed Pirelli Historic Rally. The Lanark man arrived back at The four “Quick Fire” Stages in Kershope certainly caused a load of problems, not least for David Stokes, the 2007 Champion, exiting Stage 2 with engine problems and heading back to service. David Moon set the early pace from Steve Smith (Porsche) and Jason Lepley (RS1800) with Patrick Watts (Sunbeam Tiger) out on his own among the category 1 cars being almost 20 seconds ahead of the Porsche John Keatley. The opening Chamot Hill Stage saw Bob Bean (Lotus Cortina) an early retirement well off the road. Chris White visited a ditch but was pushed back on while Andrew Haddon’s Porsche was stuck in 2nd gear and he was forced to drive the remaining Stages and road sections back to service. Arthurs Seat was next up and Moon was again quickest from Smith & McRae. Jonathan Gale (Lotus Cortina) went off while Stokes problems looked terminal. McRae was quickest on the Valley Stage despite his Porsche loosing its fan belt while Moon had a brief off near the Stage Finish. Steve Perez Lancia was miss firing badly, Tim Mason’s Porsche shattered a wheel and the Edgington’s little Singer Chamois left the road. The night ended with an incident packed run through Glen Dhu where McRae was again quickest from Mason and Lepley while Moon slipped back 20 seconds off the pace. The gathering gloom made driving tricky. Terry Cree put his Mini off and was fortunate that there were a number of spectators handy. Steve Smith (Porsche) was another to leave the road, as was Simon Tysoe (Ford Escort) while Ian Rix rolled his Escort but again the watching spectators got the car back onto it’s wheels. Phil Wylie was reported stranded, his Escort failing to negotiate a tight hairpin bend. Positions after the first leg: -
