POLOS
JOIN PEUGEOT ON PIRELLI
Another major
motor manufacturer has put it’s weight behind the Pirelli
International Rally with the news that Volkswagen will use the
high profile Gateshead based motorsport extravaganza as a round
of the Castrol Polo Challenge which will feature a shorter version
rally running as a support to the main Pirelli British Rally Championship
two day event. The Polo Challenge contenders will still have the
opportunity to perform in front of thousands of spectators on
Gatesheads exciting new “Street Circuit” Spectator
stage but will do a shorter mileage in the daunting “Killer
Kielder” forest stages.
Drivers in
the Castrol Polo Challenge all have to drive identical cars, there
are stringent limits on the modifications allowed, so the competition
is always close and exciting and drivers have to be right on the
limit to gain any advantage. “We believe the Castrol Polo
Challenge to be a superb entry route into the sport”, said
Sam Roach, Managing Director of Volkswagen Racing UK, “The
Polo is comfortably the cheapest entry-level car there is and
is among the least expensive to run”.
Already signed
up for the series is Swedish sensation Anders Fredericsson, who
will compete in the series with co-driver Jenny Aman, he is sure
to provide strong opposition for reigning champion Clive Wheeler
who is returning to the series as is fast lady driver Sophie Robinson,
seeking to improve on last years third place in the series.
A spokesman
for the Pirelli International Rally said, “ It will be great
to welcome the Castrol Polo Challenge back to Gateshead, they
really put on quite a show last year with their fully committed
style of driving, they will provide some great action for our
spectators, particularly on the Spectator Stages”.
