IT’S
GO, GO, GO FOR GATESHEAD…….AGAIN
Following last years hugely successful switch to Gateshead, the
Pirelli International Rally will return to Tyneside this year,
bringing International motorsport back to the thousands of North
East enthusiasts who flocked to enjoy the spectacular sights and
sounds of the powerful cars sliding round the unique special stages
in the town’s Watergate Park while many more made the trek
up to the distant Kielder Forest to see the action at close quarters.
The rally,
which runs of the weekend of 25th/ 26th. April is again the second
round of the Pirelli British Rally Championship and is expected
to attract the top drivers from across the United Kingdom plus
a good number from Europe, and in particular Scandinavia where
rallying is the number one sport.
Speaking on
behalf of the Pirelli International Rally organisers, Media Manager
Ed Graham said :- “ Moving the rally to Gateshead was a
calculated risk but it has proved to be an unqualified success
giving many more opportunities for promoting the rally and a huge
increase in spectator involvement. The facilities on offer in
Gateshead are staggering, it is a marvelous venue for any major
sporting event and the local council have been amazingly helpful
and co-operative, we can’t thank them enough”.
Major improvements
to this years rally will include a new, high profile, start venue,
a completely new “Spectator Stage” in Gateshead, better
parking and increased opportunities for spectators to view and
photograph the competing cars and collect autographs.
